A Byzantine Book on Dream Interpretation

This quantity discusses the so-called Oneirocriticon of Achmet, a very powerful Byzantine work on dream interpretation which was written in Greek within the 10th century and has tremendously influenced subsequent dreambooks in Byzantine Greek, Medieval Latin, and trendy European languages. By evaluating the Oneirocriticon with the 2nd-century A.D. dreambook of Artemidoros (translated into Arabic within the ninth century) and 5 medieval Arabic dreambooks, this research demonstrates that the Oneirocriticon is a Christian Greek adaption of Islamic Arabic materials and that the similarities between it and Artemidoros are as a result of affect of Artemidoros on the Arabic sources of the Byzantine work. The Oneirocriticon‘s textual custom, its language, the identities of its writer and patron, and its place amongst different Byzantine translations from Arabic into Greek are additionally investigated.
